West Bengal State University, located at Barasat, is a newly formed university established by an Act of the West Bengal State Legislative Assembly. It has affiliated all the colleges in the district of North 24 Parganas, which were formerly affiliated with the University of Calcutta. Campus of the University is located at Barasat Government College annexe building at Barasat in North 24 Parganas. A new campus of the University is being built at Nilgunj Road.
Education
West Bengal State University was established to produce human resource capable of meeting scientific, technological and social challenges of modern world. Keeping in view the educational needs of the students, integrated courses are offered up to PhD level. Recognizing the importance of professional education in today’s world, the University plans to soon launch some professional courses. Such job oriented courses would bring better job opportunities for the students. The University is also preparing to launch vocational programs for its students. It is promoting cluster concept in its affiliated colleges. The University is working hard to develop infrastructural facilities for its students.
History
West Bengal State University (WBSU) was established through an Act of the Legislative Assembly enacted by the West Bengal Act XXVIII of 2007. It started functioning from the academic session 2008-09. On 26th May, 2008. All colleges in the region, formerly affiliated to Calcutta University, were transferred to this University.
