Tripura University is the most important university in the north eastern state of Tripura. Tripura university was established by the State Government of Tripura under an Act passed by the state legislature. Educational jurisdiction of the university is spread across Tripura. Initially housed at College Tilla, the University campus has now been moved to Suryamaninagar. The Government of India granted it the status of Central University in 2007.
Education
Tripura University has set up numerous departments, directorates and centers for imparting higher education in the state. More than 20 colleges are affiliated to Tripura University. The university supervises academic programmes and conducts examinations in its affiliated colleges.
Tripura University offers programmes at graduate. postgraduate and doctorate level in several disciplines. It has established a Directorate of Distance Education that offers B.Ed through the distance learning mode. It also houses a Directorate of Professional Studies that offers professional courses in subjects like Computer Application, Business Administration, Rural Management Development and Bamboo Cultivation & Resource Utilization.
Apart from the regular courses, the university also offers specialized diploma, degree and post-graduate courses in certain subjects. It provides special provisions for studies in tribal life and culture and has also introduced vocational subjects to provide employment opportunities to the students.

Facilities
Tripura University provides hostel facility for outstation boys and girls. There is a computer centre equipped with adequate number of computers that provides internet facilities to all academic and administrative departments through LAN and VSAT internet system. The University library contains books in numerous subjects and serves the students, research scholars, and faculty members. Other facilities include students amenities’ centre, gymnasium, post-office, branch of the State Bank of India, health care centre, etc.
History
Established on 2nd October 1987, Tripura University was formed under the Tripura University Act, 2006. Later on 2nd July, 2007, it was converted to a Central University. It was established to fulfill the dreams of the local people of this region and for the cause of development of the tribal and backward people.
