Mizoram University is a Central University, located at Aizwal, the capital of Mizoram. The main campus of the university is located at Tanhril. The educational jurisdiction of the University is spread to the whole state of Mizoram. The objective of the university is to provide instructional and research facilities to aid the process of learning and imparting education.
Educational Streams
Mizoram University offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various streams. The University that started with a modest beginning with 7 academic departments inherited from North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), has now developed more than 25 academic departments functioning under various faculties. It has around 30 undergraduate colleges (including 2 professional institutions) under its affiliation.
Technical courses are offered in Electronics Engineering and Information Technology. Fulfilling its social duty, Mizoram University conducts Extension Education and rural development programmes. Center for Tribal Language offers a Diploma Course in Kokborok language and literature. Professional education is conducted in Business Administration, and Library & Information Sciences. Recognizing the importance of including local factors in the curriculum, the University conducts courses on Mizo, Forestry and Horticulture.
Facilities
Mizoram University has established a boy’s hostel in its premises with all necessary facilities. Construction of a girl’s hostel is in the pipeline. There is a computer centre offering services like intranet mail, intranet website, and computing facilities to students. The University library has a huge collection of books, journals and periodicals. General facilities like a health centre, canteen and student’s common room are provided by the university. Departmental laboratories are well equipped with sophisticated instruments to carry out practicals.
History
Established on 2nd July 2001 by the Mizoram University Act 2000, Mizoram University was has been declared as a Central University. The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) was upgraded to its constituent college on 19th April 1979. The college was again rechristened as Pachhunga University College. On 2nd July 2002, with the setting up of Mizoram University, the institution became the only constituent college of the new university.
