Jawaharlal Nehru University, also known as JNU or Nehru University is a premier university, located in New Delhi, the capital of India. Situated in South Delhi, it has been named after Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. JNU ranks high among other universities in India and also among Asian universities. JNU has been ranked among the top 100 universities in the world for life and biological sciences. School of Social Sciences at JNU has been placed at the 57th position among the world's top 100 institutes for social sciences.
Educational Streams
JNU is mainly involved in research oriented postgraduate programmes. It has established academic collaboration with more than eighty institutions of repute in twenty nine countries across the world. JNU facilitates research activities in Indian and Western traditions of thought in linguistics, literary and cultural theory, philosophy including philosophy of language, metrics and prosody, sociological thought, polity, gender, and ethnic studies and culture evolved teaching and research programmes at MA and MPhil / PhD levels. Besides the regular courses, the University has set up a Centre for Sanskrit Studies to facilitate the preservation of heritage texts and manuscripts primary intellectual texts of the Sanskrit tradition. Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Study (JNIAS) has been created to promote research and interaction with front ranking scholars from outside India in some key areas of life sciences and social / scientific implications.
Facilities
The University provides spacious well-furnished hostels which include approximately ten Hostels for Boys and Girls and one for married students as well. Besides hygienic food, hostels provide recreational like TVs, indoor games, health Club, and PCOs etc. JNU has three Guest Houses to accommodate the visitors. It has a Health Centre that provides comprehensive health care i.e. preventive, curative and provides services under one roof to students only. The Sports complex has been equipped with a Sports Stadium with office, a Yoga hall, Weight Lifting and Power Lifting hall and space for games like Cricket, Football, Tennis, Athletics and Volleyball. JNU has made special arrangements to facilitate study for individuals with disabilities involving vision, hearing, mobility, or other areas.
History
Jawaharlal Nehru University was established in 1969 to fulfill the objective of promoting the study of principles of national integration, social justice, secularism, democratic way of life, international understanding and scientific approach in solving the problems of society. In 2006 International league tables (London-based The Times Higher Education Supplement) placed JNU among the world's top 200 universities.
