Housed in a huge campus at Thanjavur in the state of Tamil Nadu, SASTRA University is a landmark in the educational map of India. It is a private co-educational University offering engineering, technology and management courses to the students. The University has been accredited with an 'A' grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), an autonomous body established by the University Grants Commission. It has carved a niche for itself in the field of academic performance, co-curricular and extra curricular activities.
Educational Streams
SASTRA University offers various undergraduate and post-graduate courses in Engineering, Science, Education, Management and Arts besides several Doctoral programs leading to PhD. It aims to provide ideal teacher-student ratio, and gives personalized attention to the students. Several mechanisms have been established by the University to support and monitor the student's progress. For all educational programs the admissions are made on the basis of the scores in the qualifying UG / PG degree program and performance in the entrance test. Preference is given to the meritorious candidates.
SASTRA University is actively involved in research activities for agencies like Department of Science & Technology, Defence Research and Development Organization, Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, Indian Space Research Organization, Department of Biotechnology, Department of AYUSH and from industries. It has been accorded with the Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) status for research activities by the Department of Science & Technology. SASTRA has established collaboration with leading research laboratories and industries such as National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, Central Electrical & Electronics Research Institute, Chennai, etc. Besides all this it has collaborated with international universities such as Nanyang Technological Institute, Singapore, Mushashi Institute of Technology, Japan, Boston University, USA, Stevens Institute of Technology, USA, Swiss German University, Germany etc.
Facilities
The University maintains state-of-the-art laboratories, well stocked library and computing facilities. There are several boys' and girls' hostels provided for accommodating the outstation students. The hostels are equipped with steam-cooking facilities and Wi-Fi system. A Guest House is available for the visiting dignitaries and parents. The University library has resource in both print and electronic medium. It subscribes to online journal databases like Science Direct, IEEE, DELNET, etc providing full-text access to over various scientific, technical and management journals and bibliographic database. It has a training and placement cell that offers professional and specialized training through group discussions, interviews and competitive examinations.
History
SASTRA University was conferred the status of a Deemed University on 26th April, 2001, under section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956, by the Government of India. It has evolved from Shanmugha College of Engineering established in 1984. The institute was later renamed as Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology and Research Academy. The University aims to impart value based higher education so that it could turn out good engineers, scientists and researchers.
