Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Open University (PSSOU) was established with the objective of educating people of rural areas with weak social and economic backgrounds. Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Open University has benefited particularly those who live in far flung areas of the state where regular education is not accessible. It has opened regional study centers in Raipur, Bastar, Ambikapur, and Bilaspur. The territorial jurisdiction of the University is spread all across Chattisgarh.
Educational Streams
Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Open University offers distance education in various courses. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate degrees and diplomas in a number of disciplines. Apart from the conventional courses, PSSOU also offers a BPP Course (Bachelor's Preparatory program) that can be availed by any literate person who wants to pursue higher education.
Courses conducted in the university are as diverse as Computer Applications, Yoga, Astrology and Herbal Medicine. The university has developed a system wherein the student can participate actively in the teaching-learning process. Majority of instructions are imparted through distance education rather than face-to-face communication. Library of Pandit Sunderlal Sharma Open University has a large number of books, periodicals, journals, magazines and research papers. A computer centre is also located at the main campus of the Open university. Regional Centers of the university act as its arms to take education to the people. These centres provide infrastructure and faculty to impart knowledge.
History
Pandit Sundarlal Sharma Open University has been named after Pandit Sunderlal Sharma, the Gandhi of Chhattisgarh. Pt Sharma is known for his patriotism and work for the upliftment of the marginalized sections of the society. The University has playing an important role in diminishing the educational gap between people belonging to rural areas and those residing in metropolitan cities.
