Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, located at Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu, is a teaching-cum-affiliating university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The University has been named after the renowned writer of late 19th century P Sundaram Pillai. MSU's educational jurisdiction is spread over the southern districts of Tamil Nadu namely Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari. The University campus is stretched over a sprawling campus at Abishekapatti on Tirunelveli-Tenkasi road.
Educational Streams
Various departments of the University offer M Phil and PhD programmes (full time and part time) besides the regular PG programmes. Community College of the university offers one year regular Diploma courses along with Diploma and Certificate Courses through Extension Learning Programmes.
Directorate of Distance Education conducts correspondence courses for the students. Sri Paramakalani Centre for Environmental Sciences is dedicated for the studies related to environment. Centre for Marine Science and Technology is dedicated for the subjects related to marine sciences.

The University offers Choice-Based Credit System (CBCS). The University conducts admission on the basis of the qualifying examination and the entrance test conducted by the University collectively.

Facilities
MSU Tirunelveli provides hostel facility for its girl students and construction of boy's hostel is in the pipeline. An extension branch of Indian Bank as well as a post office are located in the university campus. Couple of food joints provide refreshment to the hosters and the visitors.
MSU maintains a library, which is well equipped with a good collection of reference works, books and journals. It is a member of DELNET and provides e-journals service through INFONET. Other facilities include two guest houses and transportation service.

History
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University was founded by the Act 31 of 1990 by the Government of Tamil Nadu. Located at Tirunelveli town, it is a teaching-cum-affilliating University. The University was formerly inaugurated on 7th September, 1990, to fulfill the objective of catering to the long-felt needs of the southern most districts of Tamil Nadu.
