Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University is the first of its kind in the entire North East State. It was established by the Assam Legislative Assembly by an Act in 1995. The University formally started functioning from 2006. The university is headquartered at Dispur and its jurisdiction covers whole of Assam and beyond, if necessary.
Educational Streams
KK Handique State Open University conducts Bachelors programs in Arts, Commerce, Mass Communication, Computer Application and Business Administration. Diploma/Certificate Programs are offered in Tourism, Tourism and Hospitality Management, Tea Management, Petroleum related downstream industries, Textile related industries, Gas-Cracker related downstream industries, Horticulture, Vermin Technology, Sericulture, Pisciculture, Mushroom Production, Laboratory Techniques, ECG Technology, Radiography, Hardware and Networking, Handicrafts, Nursery Management, Floriculture and marketing, Food processing and marketing, Fruit processing and marketing, Hatchery management, Broiler farming, Layer farming, Piggery farming, Graphics design, and Computerized image processing.
The university is also planning to launch Bachelor’s Preparatory Program (BPP) for the aspiring learners who do not have any formal educational background. The university provides all the course materials at the doorsteps of the learners. Observing the needs of learners, it has promoted the scope of distance education through its various study centers.

History
The Krishna Kanta Handique State Open University is named to honor the illustrious Scholar Krishna Kanta Handique and his contribution to the state in the field of education. It is the first state-operated Open University in the entire North-Eastern region and fourteenth amongst the Open Universities in India. The KK Handique Open university was started with an aim to provide opportunities for higher education to a large section of the society.
