Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). It is a three-stage civil services examination, which includes preliminary exam, main exam and personal interview. Candidate who qualifies all the stages of this test gets recruited as IAS official. Personal interview is the last and the most challenging stage of the civil service exam. The candidate will be interviewed by a Board of interviewers.
The object of IAS exam interview is to assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a Board of competent and unbiased interviewers. The test is aimed at judging the mental caliber of the candidates. This is not only the assessment of the candidate’s intellectual qualities, but also social traits and his/her interest in current affairs. Some of the qualities to be judged are mental alertness, critical powers of assimilation, clear and logical exposition, balance of judgment, variety and depth of interest, ability for social cohesion and leadership, intellectual and moral integrity. The technique of the interview may or may not be a strict cross-examination. It is generally a natural, though directed and purposive conversation, which is intended to reveal the mental qualities of the candidate.
Indian Administrative Services Examination Interview Tips
- Candidates should be confident during the whole procedure of the interview.
- Attentive listening and eye contact is another point, which should be taken care of.
- Cut your answer short to the required patience shown by the interviewer talking to you. They usually like to talk more, so listen carefully and think for a few seconds before you start answering the question.
- Talk humbly about your achievements and hobbies. You may have mentioned some hobbies in the form without serious background in them. However, before the interview, it would be useful to pick up some basic info on the hobby.
- Get up to leave only when the chairperson asks you to, not because you think everyone has asked a question.
