After India was partitioned, the Punjab College of Engineering and Technology, Lahore which was earlier known as the Maclagan Engineering College remained in Pakistan. It continued to function under the name of 'East Punjab Engineering College'. It was from December 1947 that it started its operation from the premises of the 'Thomson Engineering College, Roorkee', which is now known as the 'Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee'. The word 'East' was dropped from the name of the college in the year 1950 and it was since named as the 'Punjab Engineering College'.
At the end of 1953, the Punjab Engineering College shifted to its own premises in Chandigarh and started to function there from January 1954. In the year 1994, the institution was declared the best technical college in India by the National Foundation of Engineers. The campus of the college is spread over a sprawling 146 acres with facilities for various types of sports, a gymnasium, swimming pool, playing fields and many laboratories and libraries for all its students.
