Master of Surgery (MS) in Ophthalmology is a branch of medical science, which involves the study of the anatomy, physiology, and detailed study of the surgical problems of the eyes. It is a three-year Master’s degree programme, which provides teaching and education in the stream of Ophthalmology and Visual Science that includes the delicate periocular and lid surgery, known as oculoplastics. The course also imparts the opportunities for ophthalmologic research in clinical surgery settings like fine microsurgery, using the operating microscope, and intraocular surgery or vitreoretinal surgery of the eye.
Any MBBS graduates from a recognized University thereto by Medical Council of India or its equivalent can pursue MS (Ophthalmology) course. The candidates are selected on the basis of merit in the entrance examination, which may be conducted at the state or national level. After getting the post graduation degree, one can join as an ophthalmologist in medical schools or work in private hospitals or government health agencies.
