West Bengal University of Health Sciences (WBUHS), located at Salt Lake in Kolkata, is a prominent name in the field of medical education. It was established by the West Bengal University of Health Sciences Act, 2002, passed by the West Bengal Legislature. Establishment of the University has helped in upgrading the level of medical education in the state by bringing together all the health and medical education related courses which were so far taught separately by different universities.
Educational Streams
West Bengal University of Health Sciences was started with the objective of teaching medical and pare-medical courses and also to ensure proper and systematic instruction, training and research in the field of medical sciences. Courses offered by the University can be generalized as undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral which are offered in almost all the spheres of health and medical education. The University has been making continuous efforts to improve the present scenario of medical education in the state. It has recently introduced new courses in subjects like Neuro-anaesthesia, Audiology and Speech Language Pathology.

It provides with all the necessary amenities required to carry out higher level medical education. It encourages the students to participate in physical activities and arranges several inter college, state and national level competitions of various sports. It hopes to foster and develop an intellectual climate conducive to the pursuit of scholarship and excellence, either independently or jointly with other centers of excellence of higher learning.
History
West Bengal University of Health Sciences was established in the year 2003 by an Act of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly. It was set up with the aim of upgrading the quality of medical education that were so far taught separately by the University of Calcutta, and the Universities of Burdwan and North Bengal.
