Sardar Patel University

Sardar Patel University (SPU) was the first among the universities in Gujarat to volunteer for the accreditation in the year 2000. NAAC responded with the four star status. It originally started as a rural University but now it has diversified with the motto Excellence Matters. The University has been created by a unique co-operative contribution of a large number of farmers of this rural area, who were enthused by the vision of Sardar Patel, Shri Bhaikaka and Shri Bhikhabhai.

At SPU the educational courses are framed keeping in view the needs of the students, the society, and the employing agencies, industry or organizations. Its founders have nurtured it with their values. The university conducts a variety of courses at all levels covering almost every discipline of knowledge. Several of its departments and academic programs have been internationally acclaimed. The Quality of research and the standard of publication by the research scholars is something applauded even abroad. The serene environment of its campus is free from nuisances, supporting academic excellence. The university has kept pace with the changing times and conducts top-notch courses on professional subjects with the traditional academic ones.

Sardar Patel University provides the basic facilities like the University Library that is housed in a very large and magnificent building having spacious reading rooms. The Health Centre at SPU takes care of the medical needs of students and members as well as the families of the teaching and non-teaching staff. The University Employment Information and Guidance Bureau has been established at SPU to provide employment information and assistance to the students seeking employment. Besides the basic facilities the University also promotes co-curricular activities like Sports and Games, National Service Scheme, National Education Programme, Inter-Collegiate and Inter-University Cultural Festival for Youth Campus Diversity Programme etc, to promote overall development of the students. SPU awards Free-Studentship to Postgraduate students studying at Master’s degree course, who are otherwise not eligible for the Economically Backward class Free Studentship, or the Scheduled Caste, Sched­uled Tribes and other Backward Class Scholarships.

Sardar Patel University was established in 1955 by Shree Bhailalbhai D. Patel, known as Bhaikaka. In December 1955, an Act of the Legislative Assembly of the then Bombay Province established the University. SPU has been is named after one of the greatest and illustrious sons of India and a great independence leader, Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel.
