Sampurnanand Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, is an international center of study, teaching and research in Sanskrit. The university conducts graduate, post graduate, vocational and diploma courses on Sanskrit literature with a mission to promote the culture of ancient India. Jurisdiction of the university extends all over India and it has more than 1,000 affiliated and recognised colleges.
Educational Streams
Sampurnanand Sanskrit University is committed to work as an international center for the study and research in the Sanskrit literature nurturing the dignity of this literature. To co-ordinate the oriental and occidental currents of thoughts while preserving the ancient traditions, it conducts curriculums in Sanskrit, Pali and Prakrit Languages. All subjects related to ancient India are taught. The university collects and publishes rare Sanskrit books. It also revises, edits and publishes important Sanskrit manuscripts. Pre-university courses conducted in the university include Prathama, Purva Madhyama and Uttara Madhyama. Apart from these, degree, post graduation, vocational and diploma courses are also conducted. The university offer courses like MA (Acharya) and MEd(Shikshacharya).
Facilities
Hostel facility is available in the university. Facilities like Language Labarotary, Computer Center, Health Center and a Library with more than one lakh manuscripts of different Sanskrit texts are available. The university has good enough facilities for outdoor and indoor games.
History
Sampurnanand Sanskrit University was founded in 1958 by the then Chief Minister Dr Sampurnanand and Education Minister Pt Kamalapati Tripathi, with the name of Varanaseya Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya. It was renamed as Sampurnanand Sanskrit University under the UP State University Act, 1973. The history of the Govt Sanskrit College goes back to the last quarter of the eighteenth century. Under a proposal of Sri Jonathan Duncan, the Govt. Sanskrit College was established in 1791. At that point of time, there was an arrangement for the teaching of subjects such as Vedas, Vedanta Purana, Ayurveda, Sahitya, Astrology, Theology, Mimamsa and Nyaya.
