North Orissa University, established in 1998 under the Orissa University Act, 1989, is a reputed center of learning in the region. It has been included in the list of Universities maintained under the University Grants Commission Act 1956, to impart higher education in the Tribal base area of Northern Orissa. The university survives with the objectives of providing quality professional education through distance mode. Being a state university, it is recognized by UGC and a member of The Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Educational Streams
The university conducts a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in several domains. Various professional courses have been introduced in distance learning mode to generate additional resources keeping in view the recent trends in the Indian industry. Students availing correspondence courses can get education through Study Centers. Applicants for the PhD must have Master’s Degree in the relevant subject from any recognized University with minimum 48% of marks or equivalent grade. Candidates who have done Masters in any allied subject other than the subject opted at PhD level have to produce evidence of original published research work.
Facilities
The University runs hostels for accommodation of outstation students; boys and girls separately. There is a central library housed in an elegantly designed building. The library caters the need of students, teachers, researchers associated with the University. The library is as a centre to advance knowledge in the fields of non-conventional subjects relevant to this part of the state. A well-equipped Central Computer Lab with centralized A/C is also offered to the learners. Training and placement cell has been established to help out the students for career growth.
