Manipur University is a teaching cum-affiliating University. It was founded in 1980 under the Manipur University Act 1980 at Canchipur (Imphal) in Manipur. It has territorial jurisdiction over the whole of the state of Manipur. The university was converted into a Central University in 2005. Manipur University has more than 70 affiliated colleges and one constituent college Manipur Institute of Technology (MIT).
Educational Streams
Manipur University offers number of courses through its departments and affiliated institutions. Apart from the usual conventional and professional courses, the university includes in its curriculum several subjects specific to Manipur state like language and dance. Professional courses like Library & Information Science, Business Administration, Journalism & Mass Communication enable students to get placement later. Integrated courses in MSc Biotechnology and Bachelor of Physical Education (BPEd) are also conducted. Admissions to most courses are made on the basis of performance acquired in the qualifying examinations.
Facilities
The central library has a collection of more than 1,00,000 books on a wide range of subjects. The nerve centre of academic activities for students, teachers and staff of the University, it is also a referral library of the state. Located in a three storey building, the university library opens from 9 AM to 5 PM. Keeping up to the spirit of the state, various games and sports are also actively promoted in the university. To bring more expoure to students, seminars and conferences are regularly organized. The university also provides for limite hostel facility for its students.
History
Since its establishment in 1980, the Manipur University strives to impart the highest quality of education to its students and believes in striking a balance between academics and ethics. In 2005, it got the status of a central university due to its excellent role in imparting higher education.
