Magadh University

Incepted in 1962, Magadh University at Bodhgaya is one of the largest universities of India. It is a state university and has been recognized by the University Grant Commission (UGC). Established by Bihar State University Act 1976, Magadh University expands over an area comprising of Gaya, Jehanabad, Patna, Nalanda, Nawada and Aurangabad districts. The university, which has developed both horizontally and vertically since its inception, has 4 post Graduate Departments, 44 Constituent and 85 affiliated Colleges, and more than 2 lakh students.

 

Courses offered in Magadh University have both variety and depth. Along with conventional courses, several professional/vocational courses like Business Administration, Computer Application, Environmental Science, Tourism & Travel Management, Counseling & Rehabilitation, Journalism & Mass Communication are conducted in different constituent / affiliated colleges of the University. Department of Distance Education conducts professional and vocational courses for the students who are constrained to jobs and unable to pursue regular courses. The university has constantly upgraded research facilities encouraging students to go for research programs.

 

For providing accommodation to the students, Magadh University has established several hostels for girls and boys separately. There is a Central library with a large number of books, manuscripts and other study materials. The departments at the university have their separate libraries. Facilities like Computer Labs, Healthcare, Banking, Post-Office services are available in the campus. Modern sports facilities have also been developed in the campus. A large Sports Complex is located on the campus for different outdoor and indoor games particularly athletic events.

 

Magadh University was established in 1962 by an act of the Government of Bihar. Renowned educationist and the then Education Minister, Late Satyendra Narayan Sinha played an important role in establishment of the university. It started functioning from Red House of Gaya for the official purposes and the teaching activities were undertaken in two rented buildings, Jamuar Kothi and Dora Kothi. In the beginning teaching was done in English, Economics, Geography, History, Mathematics, Hindi and Philosophy.
