University of Lucknow, which came into being in 1920, carries forward the legacy of prestigious Canning College, which was itself founded in 1867 by Raja Dakshinaranjan Mukherjee. The King George's Medical College and Isabella Thoburn College were other influences behind establishment of the university. It is a public university, recognized by UGC.
Educational Streams
The university imparts education in several domains through Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Management and Diploma programs. During its initial days, the university imparted traditional academic subjects. However, it changed with time, and added a number of professional and vocational subjects to its curriculum as the time progressed. Institutes and Centres related to a variety of subjects like Management Studies, Public Relations, Tourism Studies, Development Studies, Urban Studies, Women Studies as Mass Communication are associated with the university. Admission forms are provided to the candidates at university office. Aspirants can also submit admission forms online by accessing university website. Reservation is applicable according to the government rules.
Facilities
Library, known as Tagore Library, is the central research center of the University of Lucknow. It is here that the academic fraternity- both the preceptor and his pupils could find intellectual food. It is respected as one of the oldest, well organised and richest libraries of India. With the advent of Information Technology, this library is also changing its traditional format. The students of Lucknow University can join National Cadet Corps, NCC and National Service Scheme, NSS services to develop their personality.
History
The thought of opening a University at Lucknow was first mooted by Raja Sir Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, Khan Bahadur. The first step to bring the University into being was taken when a General Committee of educationists and persons interested in university education appointed for the purpose, met in conference at Government House, Lucknow in 1919. At this meeting Sir Harcourt Butler, who was in the chair, outlined the proposed scheme for the new university. University of Lucknow was born in 1920.
