Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya was established to fulfill the purpose of providing Sanskrit education in Maharashtra. It is a statutory University having the powers to affiliate institutes coming under its jurisdition. The University is headquartered at Ramtek and is the first Sanskrit University of Maharashtra and Central India. The Kalidas Sanskrit University is unique in its academic nature and is entirely different from all the existing Sanskrit Universities.

Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University has developed innovative academic programmes and syllabus having modern subjects associated with traditional Sanskrit. The courses offered by the University emphasise on modernity and also strive to preserve tradition and culture.
All the courses offered by the University are consultancy-oriented. It lays emphasis on science and technology in ancient India as preserved in the Sanskrit texts. Courses offered by the University are prepared on the basis of social requirements with Sanskrit as a main ingredient. It offers several courses at separate educational levels viz. certificate, junior diploma, senior diploma, higher diploma, post-graduate diploma and Bachelor degree.

In addition to theses courses, the Kalidas Sanskrit university offers Angam (diploma course) that is a stepping stone into Sanskrit Treasury. It has been specially designed for raising the interest of people to learn the Sanskrit language. There is a special course namely Sanskrit Parichay that is an advanced course designed for the students who have successfully completed the basic course and desire to learn the language further. For advance level studies, there is Sadhana (Sanskrit) that is designed for students who want to pursue advanced study of Sanskrit after completing the Agam course.
History
Established on 18th September 1997, Kavikulguru Kalidas Sanskrit University was formed to fill the gap of Sanskrit education in the state. The Vishvavidyalaya has been named after the Great poet of India, Kalidasa, who had been reverentially called 'Kavikulguru'.
