Second oldest university in the state, Karnataka University has been recognized with the Potential for Excellence by University Grants Commission of India (UGC). The University has been accredited with five star status by National Accreditation Council (NAAC). The educational jurisdiction of the University spreads over seven districts of North Karnataka namely Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Bijapur , Bagalkot, Belgaum and Karwar.
Educational Streams
Karnataka University has an excellent track record of academic excellence especially in areas of like Genetics, Microbiology, Reproductive Health and Management. It has also established collaborations in India and foreign countries such as USA, Germany, France, UK etc. Distinguished statesmen, scientists, educationists and literary figures have visited and addressed KUD faculty and students. Apart from the University campus, constituent college and affiliated colleges the University has established post graduate centres in several cities of Karnataka.
The PG Centre established at Belgaum offers Master of Education (M Ed), a course of one academic year with two semesters for full time students. Another PG Centre at Karwar offers M Sc course following the semester system wherein students are admitted as per the norms of Karnataka University. The Bijapur PG Centre offers MA in History and Archaeology and PG Diploma courses in Tourism, Art-History, Computer Application, Food Processing and Quality Control.
Facilities
The university provides hostel accommodation for its students and guest houses for the visitors. Recreation and sports facilities are also available for all the students, teaching and non-teaching staff members. The University maintains good play grounds, tennis courts, basket ball court, swimming pool, volley ball court, gymnasium, indoor shuttle badminton court, and table tennis facility on the Campus. State Bank of India and Syndicate have set up their branches inside the campus. Postal and telegraphic services are also provided within the campus.
History
Started at Mumbai in 1949, the location of the University was shifted to Dharwad in October, 1949. In March 1950, Karnataka University was officially inaugurated. The rapid development of the institution is attribited to Dr. D. C. Pavate who was the vice-chancellor of the university from 1954 to 1967.
