Jiwaji University located in Gwalior is a residential and an affiliating University. It was the first University in the state to have started the implementation of self supporting programmes. Six districts of Gwalior and Chambal Division including Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Guna, Shivpuri and Datia fall under the territorial jurisdiction of affiliation of the University.
Educational streams
Along with the contemporary courses the university offers job oriented courses in (i) Computer Science, (ii) Chemicals, Sales and Marketing Management, (iii) Instrumentation and Commercial Methods of Industrial Analysis, (iv) Environmental Chemistry, (v) Microbiology, (vi) Molecular Biology and Immunology, (vii) Master in Computer Application,(viii) Bachelor in Physical Education, (x) Master of Physical Education, (xi) Refrigeration Technology. The University also has a center of foreign Language that imparts diploma and certificate courses in English, French, German and Russian. The University has established a Center for Science and Instrumentation (USIC) that extends facilities for fabrication and maintenance of laboratory instruments of School of Studies and affiliated colleges.
Jiwaji University also offers learning through distance education through Institute of Distance Education, Gwalior.
Facilities
The University provides all the basic facilities to its students along with a state-of-the-art computer centre. The Computer Centre of the University is one of the best centres the country provides central computing facility to university teaching departments and research activities. The Central Library located in the University has a vast collection of books and research journals. Apart from the Central Library, each School of Studies has a library, well equipped with books and journals, and useful for advanced study.
The university has a sports complex and newly constructed Gymnasium which is among the best in the Indian Universities with all modern facilities. The Physical Education Department caters to the games and sports of the students. The Students Welfare takes care of the extra curricular activities like music, dance and drama and other performing arts.
History
On 23rd May 1964, Jiwaji University was established as a teaching and affiliating University under the provision of MP Government. The foundation stone of the University Campus was laid by Dr. Sarwapalli Radhakrishanan, the then President of India, on 11th December 1964.
