Jamia Hamdard has been declared as a Deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD). It is located in Hamdard Nagar area of New Delhi. The university has been accredited with an ‘A’ grade by National Accreditation Council. The University was started by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, who wanted to promote the education of Unani Medicines in India.
Educational Streams
Jamia Hamdard university offers courses at all the levels of higher education viz. undergraduate programs, postgraduate programs and research programs (PhD). The University is considered a prominent name in the field of higher learning in Unani Medicine and other areas of knowledge.

The University has added several new programs to the existing curriculum that includes graduate and post graduate programs in information technology and computer applications. These programmes have become very popular with the students.
Besides this, postgraduate programmes in business management, physiotherapy and occupational therapy are also popular as they offer better job opportunities. Undergraduate programmes in Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy have also been started.
The University offers postgraduate and doctoral programmes in several disciplines with advanced facilities for carrying out research and training programs.
Jamia Hamdard Open and Distance Learning (JH ODL) center takes care of the distance learning courses and programmes offered by the university.
Facilities
Jamia Hamdard provides residential facilities for the staff and students. It has established separate hostels for girls and boys and foreign students. Every hostel is provided with a common room, reading room, dining hall, and visitors room. It maintains a central library and six faculty libraries for different faculties.
The computer centre of the University functions as a laboratory for the Department of Computer Science and offers computing facilities as well as all necessary peripherals and requisite software. Other facilities include a well equipped gymnasium and playgrounds for cricket/football, tennis, volleyball, basketball and badminton.

History
On 10th May, 1989, Jamia Hamdard was granted the status of a deemed University by the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The University was originally started as a small Unani clinic in the year 1906 by Hakeem Hafiz Abdul Majeed, a well-known practitioner of Unani System of Medicine of his time.
