Jadavpur University is located at Kolkata in the state of West Bengal. It is one of the leading universities in India and offers a vast repertoire of courses. The University has two campuses - the main campus at Jadavpur and the new campus at Salt Lake. Leading research institutes like the Indian Association for Cultivation of Science and the Central Glass and Ceramics Research Institute have been co-ordinating with Jadavpur University in various fields.
Educational Streams
JU offers under-graduate and post-graduate programs in Arts, Engineering and Science. The university conducts adult education programs as well. The Academic Session of the University starts from 1 July to 30 June next for UG section and 1 August to 31 July next for PG section. Admissions are made strictly on the basis of merit and marks obtained in the last qualifying public examination and or the Joint Entrance Examination or the admission test plus viva-voce/ interview, as applicable. The University has established research departments that specialize in Oceanography, Electronics & Telecommunication, Computer Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. JU is one of the few institutions India which offers courses and undertakes research in Architecture and Planning.
Facilities
Jadavpur University provides all possible amenities to its students that includes separate hostels for both men and women, guest house, health centre, gymnasium, indoor stadium, auditoriums and lecture theatres, centralized computer centre, students' amenity centre, office of placement and training, employment information bureau, canteens. Besides all that the University also houses playground on the main campus and cricket ground at Salt Lake. The University Library is one of the best-equipped libraries in the country and caters the academic and research needs of the faculty, research scholars, students, officers and non-teaching staff.
History
In 1906, National Council of Education (NCE) was set up to impart literary, scientific and technical education on a national basis. By 1940, the institute started functioning as an independent university. On December 24, 1955, it was converted into Jadavpur University with full autonomy by the Government of India.
