Dr B R Ambedkar Open University (BRAOU) was formerly known as Andhra Pradesh Open University. It is located in located in the city of Hyderabad. The Open University has been instrumental in opening numerous opportunities for working people and those who want to improve their academic qualifications and professional skills. Established by an act of the Andhra Pradesh state legislature, it has developed a wide network of more than 200 study centers spread throughout the state of Andhra Pradesh.
Educational Streams
BRAOU has developed a multi-media teaching-learning approach which comprises of self-learning print material, supported by audio, video lessons and regular broadcast of lessons through All India Radio. The education system of the University is flexible in terms of admission, choice of programs, duration, age requirements, teaching methods and evaluation procedures. It offers various courses covering almost all the levels of higher education viz. certificate, undergraduate, professional, diploma, post-graduate and research programs.
For imparting education at several places simultaneously, Dr B R Ambedkar Open University has established a wide network of regional centers and study centers, spread across the State. There are around 200 Study Centers, seven of which are exclusively for women. PG programmes are offered at 19 Study Centers of the University. The Study Centers are located in regular colleges and work on weekends and holidays.
Facilities
Central Library of the University provides a variety of services like documentation, reference, lending of books to its clientele, inter-institutional loans, etc. Study Centres are also attached with Library Cells. The library and its Study Centre cells have collection of more than one lakh books. They also subscribe to a large number of newspapers and journals. The University's Computer Centre has facilities for storing, retrieving and updating all the data pertaining to the students. Study Centres also offer counseling services to the students.
History
Established on 26th August 1982, BRAOU was set up by an act of Andhra Pradesh state legislature. The establishment of this university was conceived as an affirmative step taken by the Government of Andhra Pradesh to provide opportunities of higher education to all sections of society.
