Assam University came into existence in 1994 through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989. The University is situated at Silchar in South Assam, bordering Bangladesh, Mizoram, Manipur, Maghalaya, and Nagaland. Objective of Assam University is to disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities. It has been recognized by University Grant Commission, UGC, Government of India.
Educational Streams
The university offers a multidisciplinary approach to higher education. The prospectus of Assam University covers two years courses MA in Arts, Languages, Economics, History, Political Science, Sociology, Philosophy, Education and French. M Sc program is offered in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Life Science, Bio-Technology, Ecology and Environmental Science respectively. Other courses offered are Mass Communication (MMC), M Com (Commerce), and five years integrated courses in M Sc (Computer Science), MSW: (Social work) and BA LLB honors.
MVA (Visual Arts), one year M Ed course, one year advance Diploma/ Diploma/ Certificate Courses in French and one year PG diploma in Information Technology are also conducted. Additional courses are one year PG Diploma in Bio-informatics/ Marketing Management/ Tea Management and Journalism. Certificate Courses are available in Functional Sanskrit and Arabic Language. B Tech Courses of four year are available in Agricultural Engineering and Information Technology. Admissions are done through AIEEE central counselling. Two year Master Degree Course program in Business Administration (MBA) is offered to the candidates clear MAT conducted by AIMA.
Facilities
Hostel accommodation in one boys hostel and one girls hostel is provided to the deserving students. Laboratories and workshops are available with ample machinery and tools. Transport service is available for the students residing locally. A central library located inside the campus is available for students besides some small departmental libraries. Presently the Library holds a large amount of books.
History
Established in 1994, Assam University functions under the Assam University Act 1989. It steadily attracts students from the neighboring states. It has contributed a large number of eminent personalities to the nation in the fields of Science, Education and Arts.
