Aliah University is situated in Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. It started its academic session in the year 2008-09. The UGC recognized University offers a blend of tradition and modernity, and aims to emerge as a unique organization of higher studies and research. In spite of being a minority institution, its prime objective is to provide education to the people of any race, creed, caste or class, especially for the socially and educationally backward classes belonging to the minorities.
Educational Streams
Presently, the University’s focus is on integrated courses in the field of Theology and professional studies. Academic programmes offered by Aliah University include 5 year integrated MA in Arabic (with a provision of dual degree, 3-year B.A. Hons. + 2 year MA), 5 year integrated MA in Islamic Theology (with a provision of dual degree, 3-year BA Hons. + 2-year MA) (Equivalent to the combination of the existing 3-year Kamil (UG) course and the MM, PG course).
Apart from these courses Aliah University offers professional courses viz. 5 year integrated M Sc in Computer Science (3-year B Sc(H) + 2-year M Sc), 5 year integrated MCA (3-year BCA(H) + 2-year MCA), 5 year integrated MBA (3-year BBA(H) + 2-year MBA ( with specialization in HR, Marketing, Hospital Management, Retail Management, Systems & Finance) and 2 Year M Sc in Media Science (Journalism & Mass communication).

Professional programmes stated amongst the last four courses are being conducted in collaboration with Techno India Group, a pioneer in the development of Education, Research and Entrepreneurship in Science, Technology, Medicine and Management. All these courses offered by the University have been designed with innovative curricula to help the students gain more knowledge, experience and ethical values. Moreover, it propagates the idea of integrated course (3+2 year course), so that it could reduce the vexed problem of drop-out at the graduation level which is the highest among the socially and educationally backward minorities.
Facilities
Aliah University maintains hostels to accommodate the students of Madrasah-i-Aliah. It has a three-storied building known as the Elliot Hostel that provides residential facilities to the students.
History
Madrasah-i-Aliah or Calcutta Madrasah was upgraded to Aliah University by an Act passed by the West Bengal Legislature (West Bengal Act XXVII of 2007). This Madrasah was established by Warren Hastings, the first Governor General of India in the year 1780. The newly established University wishes to promote innovations in education leading to restructuring of existing courses of Islamic Theology and Arabic, and introduction of new courses like Islamic studies, Islamic Finance and Banking, and Islamic Insurance.
