Zakir Husain College was known as Delhi College, previously. The college is a constituent part of the University of Delhi. Apart from offering courses at undergraduate level in the streams of Arts, Commerce, Sciences, the college also offers a number of courses in language at undergraduate degree level. Zakir Hussain College is an institute of influence over Urdu and Islamic learning in India. At present, it is the only college of DU, offering BA (Hons) in Arabic and Persian.
Established in 1792 by a general of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb, Zakir Hussain College is the oldest existing college in Delhi. It went through many phases of time right from the Mughal to the British. The college was given its present name in 1975, after Dr. Zakir Husain, a distinguished educator and former President of India. In 1986, the college was shifted to its present building. The old building of the college was declared heritage monument by the ASI, in 2002.
