Sir JJ College of Architecture is a prestigious educational institution in India and the world. It boasts of being one of the first educational institutions for higher education in Architecture, in Asia. Affiliated to the University of Mumbai, Maharashtra, the college was set up in 1857, by the erstwhile Government of Bombay, from the grants made by the philanthropist Sir Jamshedji Jeejeebhoy, the first Baronet of Bombay. The institution has also gained the status of one of the top architecture colleges in India.
The history of Sir JJ College of Architecture can be traced back to 1896, when Draftsman's Class was incepted in order to impart technical and practical knowledge to men and make them fit enough to work with Architect's office, which was a part of Sir J.J School of Arts. The course offered in the institute underwent changes in 1913 and 1936. At the same time, a number of changes were also brought about in the duration of the course. In 1952, the Department of Architecture of the institution gained affiliation from the University of Bombay. Currently, Sir JJ College of Architecture is conducting course in Architecture, at both undergraduate and post graduate levels.
