National Institute of Technology (NIT), Durgapur, is one of the premier engineering institutes of India. The institute was formerly known as the Regional Engineering College, Durgapur and was established by an Act of Parliament in 1960. In 2002, the institute was accorded the status of Deemed University and was renamed as NIT Durgapur. In 2007, NIT Durgapur was upgraded as an 'Institute of National Importance'. The institute imparts various undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate level programmes in the field of engineering. Undergraduate:
Aspiring candidates must have passed the 10+2 or Higher Secondary Examination of West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education or its equivalent, with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English.
Post Graduate:
M Tech
Candidates need to have passed graduation in relevant stream, from any recognized University.
MCA
The applicant is required to have scored minimum 60% marks (6.5/10 CGPA) in the examinations of class 12th and Graduation with Mathematics/ Statistics/ Business Mathematics as one of the subjects. There is a relaxation of 5% for SC/ST candidates.
MBA
One must have passed Graduation in any discipline with minimum 50% marks from a recognized Indian University.

Admission for UG courses is done through AIEEE (A National level entrance for NITs and Other Engineering Colleges in India) conducted by CBSE.

Post Graduate:
M Tech
Applicants need to qualify in GATE entrance exam, conducted by IITs, followed by an interview / viva-voce for final selection. Non-GATE candidates can be considered for admission subject to the availability of seats. Non-GATE candidates are selected through college admission test (written/interview).
MBA
Students are selected for MBA course on the basis of rank secured at any of the entrance tests CAT or MAT or XAT followed by a Group Discussion (GD) and Interview at the institute.
MCA
Applications are selected through NIMCET (National Institute of Technology Common MCA Entrance Test), a common entrance test held by NIITs for admission to MCA.
