Established in 1947, Marine Engineering & Research Institute (MERI) holds the distinction of being the oldest marine engineering college of India. The institute was previously known as Directorate of Marine Engineering Training. In 1994, it was renamed as Marine Engineering and Research Institute. Affiliated to Jadavpur University, it offers under graduate programme. The course offered by the institute has got the approval of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. Over the years, the ISO 9001:2000 certified institute has produced numerous well-qualified and skilled marine engineers. The institute boasts of ample modern facilities within its campus.

The candidates should have passed 10 + 2 examination in science stream from a recognized board. In addition, they should be medically fit and should have maximum age of 20 years as on 1st October of the year of admission. Relaxation of 5 years is there for SC/ST candidates.
