IIT Mandi is one of the new IITs estableshed recently across various parts of India. The operations of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, began on the campus of IIT Roorkee, on July 24, 2009. It was registered as a Society on June 20, 2009. Currently, the students pursuing B Tech courses from IIT Mandi are being benefited from the facilities provided in the IIT Roorkee campus. A new campus has been proposed for IIT Mandi, at the panoramic site in Kamand, Himachal Pradesh. The construction of the new (permanent) campus for IIT Mandi is slated for 2011. There, the institute will offer M Tech programme from 2011. From this year i.e. 2010, the institute will also offer research programmes in all disciplines. All research scholars will be eligible for an Institute scholarship.
