IIT (Indian Institute of Technology), Bhubaneswar (Orissa), was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, in 2008. The institute is functioning under the mentorship of IIT Kharagpur. The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes in various branches of engineering. The temporary campus of IIT Bhubaneswar has been developed by expanding IIT Kharagpur facility. Hence, it functions within IIT Kharagpur Bhubaneswar Extension Campus.
In the recent past, the Government of Orissa sanctioned 935 acres of land at Arugul (Orissa), for the establishment of a full-fledged campus of IIT Bhubaneswar. IIT Bhubaneswar, instead of organizing itself into various departments, has subdivided itself into various schools like the School of Basic Sciences, School of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, School of Electrical Science, School of Mechanical Science, School of Infrastructure, School of Material and Mining Engineering and School of Humanities and Social Science. IIT Bhubaneswar is striving to achieve academic excellence of international repute.
