Government Central Textile Institute (GCTI) Kanpur was set up in 1971, with a mission to develop industrial education in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Over the years, the institute has emerged as an important technical educational centers of North India. GCTI is affiliated to Uttar Pradesh Technical University (UPTU) Lucknow. Courses offered by the institute have been approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. GCTI was incepted in 1914.
Soon after its establishment, Government Central Textile Institute started offering diploma programmes in Textile Manufacture and Chemical Technology. The institute was renovated to its present form, in 1937, through a merger between Department of Textile Technology Kanpur and Thomson Civil Engineering College of Roorkee. Before being affiliated to UPTU, Govt. Central Textile Institute had its affiliations with Agra University and Kanpur University. Currently, GCTI offers technical courses at graduate and post graduate levels, apart from providing facilities for PhD research.

Candidates need PG degree in the relevant discipline.
