Government Ayurvedic College (or the Government Dhanwantri Ayurvedic College and Hospital Ujjain) was started by ‘Shri Dhnwantari Ayurveda Chiktsa Mahavidhylaya Evam Sodha Kendra Nyas Ujjaiyani’ (a private trust), in 1969. In 1972, the college was taken over by the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The college is affiliated to Vikram University, Ujjain. In 1997, Government Ayurvedic College Ujjain was declared as an autonomous institution, by the State Government.
The Department of Ayurveda (AYUSH), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare Government of India, awarded Government Ayurvedic College, the status of a 'State Model Institute of Madhya Pradesh', in 2004. The Ayurvedic College is currently under the Directorate of ISM&H and Department of Medical education, Government of Madhya Pradesh. The college undergraduate and postgraduate level programmes in the field of Ayurveda. Government Ayurvedic College has a number of basic amenities for the overall development of its students within the campus.

Admission for the course is based on the marks obtained by the candidates in Pre Ayurveda Homeopathic Unani Test (PAHUT).

All India Entrance Test is held for the admission.
