The college was established in 1963 with affiliation to Karnataka University, Dharwad. Now, Basaveshwara Engineering College is affiliated to Visvesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum and approved by All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Government of India, New Delhi.

The candidates must have passed 10+2 level examination with minimum 45% marks (40% for SC/ST) with PCM subjects, from any recognized Board.
Post Graduate:
Graduation in BE/B.Tech must have been completed by the candidates, to be eligible for the PG programmes.
