Careers in Teaching

Teaching is one of the noble professions in the world. As a teacher, one not only develops the aptitude and intellectual mind of students, but also regulates the behavior of the society in an indirect manner. Teachers contribute to the society in many ways – they are the producers of eminent doctors, engineers, journalists and other professionals. They not only groom their students to excel in their chosen field, but also create the sense of responsibility in their scholars, as citizens of the country. Confidence, wisdom, patience, intelligence, friendliness, amicability, communication skills and passion for subject are the chief qualities of a good teacher.

Teaching has been among those career options that have different specializations. Students can become teachers in nursery schools, middle schools, high schools, senior secondary schools, colleges, institutes, universities etc. They can join any of the aforementioned educational institutes in both public and private sector, after acquiring the desired skills and qualifications. Many educational institutes have been offering courses in teaching, at different degree levels.

Course Details
Courses in the field of teaching may vary according to different levels of teaching. For instance, in order to teach at the nursery level, one has to study Nursery Teacher Training (NTT) program. To be eligible for that, one must have passed 10+2 examination from any recognized Board. For the middle level, one has to pursue Teachers Training Certificate (TTC), which requires passing marks in 12th standard. For the high school level, Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) should be passed by the graduate candidates. As far as colleges and universities are concerned, to become a lecturer, one has to complete his/her postgraduate degree or Doctoral degree and qualify the National Eligibility Test (NET), which is conducted by University Grants Commission (UGC).

Career Prospects
Depending upon the educational qualification and skills, teachers can work as specialists in the field of adult Literacy, remedial and self-enrichment education or become professors of colleges and universities, teachers of preschool, kindergarten, elementary, middle and high schools, tuition teachers, teachers of performing arts such as music, dance or teachers of defense techniques and martial arts.

A number of educational institutes in India have been conducting courses in the field of teaching. Remuneration
Primary or junior level teachers can get around Rs 5000 - Rs9000 per month. The high school or senior school teachers can draw a salary ranging between Rs 15000 and Rs20000 per month. The salary would be higher with experience. The salary of college and university professors may range around Rs25000 - Rs35000 per month.
