Careers in Marine Engineering

Marine engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the designing, manufacturing, fixing, managing, protecting and repairing machinery and equipments of a ship and other marine vehicles. Marine engineers have to study wide range of systems that includes diesel engines, gas turbines, boilers, compressors, steam turbine, heat exchangers etc. He/she has to supervise the functioning of engine room of a ship. They not only have to create new and improvised designs and equipments, but also have to ensure the efficacy of the existing ones. A marine engineer has to continuously update his/her knowledge. Course Details
Numerous engineering colleges all over India offer degree programs at under graduate as well as at post graduate levels in the field of marine engineering. Minimum requirement to seek admission to under graduate programs is 10+2 in science stream (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English), while for post graduate programs, it is a B.E/B. Tech degree in marine engineering. One can even opt for super specialty program also. For Ph. D program, one has to first gain an M.E degree in marine engineering, from a recognized University.

Career Prospects
After pursuing the relevant course in marine engineering, one can work in ports, shipping industries, Directorate General of Shipping and educational institutes. Various countries including France, USA and U.K hire proficient marine engineers. American Bureau of Shipping (USA) is one of the prominent organizations that employ marine engineers. Merchant Navy, Navy and manufacturing industries also recruit trained marine engineers.
